Buffy... (attempt at review)
I have historically made mocking remarks with regard to the show "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" to friend and family of its viewers. After being verbally slaughtered by my sister-in-law (well deserved), I decided to make the effort and watch an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and see what the hub-bub is all about. I promised to view the show objectively. I did just that. My review of Buffy, I feel, is premature. I should watch more episodes to have a better touch for the format. With that said, here goes...
How do I start? Hmm... Let's say this... Buffy (the show) makes an interesting use of metaphor. The witch/demon/vampire/etc characters are used to mirror the reality of day to day life (as best I could tell from 1 episode). I will admit "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" holds a critics interest. However, I do see through this hormonal version of "Star Trek: The Next Gen". Both shows entertain, but Buffy will appeal to the teens and gen-x'ers. Sex always sells. Buffy (the show) uses cleavage, cute faces, cuddly voices, and Laura Croft-like fight scenes to keep an audience through segments of advertising targeted at acne, tampons, and soda. I honestly see the acclaim. I haven't become a fan, but that doesn't mean too much. I prefer comedy. I will have to watch more episodes to grasp the characters and get a sense of their purpose.
The episode I saw was about a young "demon" (aka Lesbian) struggling with her bigot father. Oh yeah... there was much gratuitous kicking and punching from a tight shirted Sarah Michelle Gellar. My initial reaction to the Buffy character was that she represents the sexy powerful 90's woman, but I am not so sure yet. All of the witchcraft symbolizes a woman mysterious power over men. Maybe I am simplifying.
